Before advising students in math and bioinformatics, Jeff worked for three years in
the Honors College at the University of Utah, where he oversaw thesis completion,
co-created the third and fourth year learning communities, and advised honors students
toward degree completion. Prior to joining the University of Utah, he spent fifteen
years at Florida State University, working in both their Honors Program and Biology
department. While his responsibilities varied during his time at FSU, academic advising
was always a part of his duties. Altogether, Jeff has spent twenty years with various
roles in higher education, and academic advising has been a part of every single year.
He holds a bachelor's degree in Chemistry Education and a Master's degree in Counseling
from Indiana University.
Jeff says that college students are "absolutely awesome" to work with. He is passionate
about watching students grow and develop. Math students come from varied backgrounds
and interests, and helping them acheive their goals is a privilege that he is thankful
for.
Jeff is available to meet with students Monday through Friday in the mornings and
early afternoons, either in-person or virtually. He also holds one hour a week of
drop-in advising. Students should come prepared with some questions and a rough idea
of potential classes for the next semester. While he is happy to help students plan
future semesters, part of his advising style includes empowering students with the
tools they need to successfully navigate college.
Jeff enjoys driving his children to and from various sporting activities, attending
Utah football and other athletic events, and cooking meals for his family.
Bekah Brock joined the team as an Academic Advisor in July 2026.
Before joining the math and bioinformatics academic advising team, Bekah Brock worked
as a high school counselor. She received a BA in Human Relations and Nonprofit Management
from the University of Oklahoma and a graduate degree in Clinical Mental Health and
School Counseling from Denver Seminary.
As an academic advisor, Bekah helps students navigate their degree audits and requirements
and makes sure that students feel capable of doing their reasonable best. A highlight
of her day is when a student remarks "this was really helpful," because she knows
that they got something out of their time together that will hopefully make their
life better.
Bekah is available for in-person meetings on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, and
for online meetings every weekday. To get the most from an advising session it can
help if a student comes in with a plan. That way, she can work together with the
student to highlight the best parts of the plan, move around the weaker portions,
and tweak it according to what will work best for the student.
In her spare time Bekah enjoys watching TV with her husband, playing board games with
friends, and analyzing reality TV.
