Joseph Fourier (1768 -- 1830)

In research spanning the years 1807 - 1824, Joseph Fourier
showed that any piecewise continuous periodic function could be
represented as an infinite sum of sines and cosines.

This is a long and beautiful story with truly fantastic
applications in science and technology. More in this space
            later.
