Biophysical Modeling and Numerical Simulation of Radio-Frequency-Ablation of Liver Tumors |
Abstract |
Radio-Frequency-Ablation together with Microwave-Ablation and High-Intensity-Focused-Ultrasound-Ablation have become significant alternatives to open surgery on cancer lesions. This is in particular true for Radio-Frequency-Ablation on liver lesions, where we see a rapid world wide increase in these procedures over the last decade. Although these procedures are minimally invasive and even can be applied in situations where open surgery is not possible they leave several problems and risks. The most challenging of these is that vascular systems in the neighborhood can challenge a complete destruction of a lesion because of cooling effects, thus rendering such a procedure as useless. We will discuss a fairly complete mathematical analysis of these problems ranging from a fundamental biophysical modeling and numerical simulation, including several optimal control frameworks for optimizing the procedure and identification of patient specific parameters, to a clinically manageable software application that includes planning, validation and guidance of a Radio-Frequency-Ablation procedure. Challenges for the other ablation procedures will also be addressed. |
