Classifying wild categories |
Abstract |
In many, if not most, areas of mathematics there are just too many objects of study to expect a meaningful classification up to isomorphism. Too many topological spaces, too many modules (over a fixed ring), too many representations (of a fixed group), etc, etc. We shall see how mathematicians have proposed simplifications of these categories and how the apparently impossible classifications become manageable via geometric ideas. |
