"Recent studies on HIV-1 latency and reactivation"
Abstract:
Treatment with antiretroviral therapy can potently suppress HIV-1
replication, but is unable, to this date, to erradicate infection. A
long-lived latent reservoir has been found in the memory compartment
of CD4+ T cells. The dynamics of this reservoir are modulated by
antigen recognition, cellular activation, inflammatory signals, and
the homeostasis of memory cells. My laboratory has developed a unique
ex vivo system that allows for the establishment and the detailed
study and manipulation of latently infected, primary memory
cells. Results arising from this system will be discussed in the
context of the current thinking in the field.
