Course Content

This course is the first in a sequence of two that intoduce the mathematical concepts of statistical inference. The topics covered in this course include: distributions of functions of random variables, order statistics, limiting distributions, Central Limit Theorem, sampling distribtuions, methods of point estimation, uniform minimum variance unbiased estimators (UMVUE), concepts of sufficiency and completeness, exponential class, interval estimation (Chapters 6 through 11 in the above text).

Notes

1.Quizzes: There will be approximately 7-8 quizzes in the form of short fifteen-minute quizzes at the beginning of class or longer take-home quizzes due at the start of class. Quizzes will be based on homework material and class discussions. In computing the quiz average, the lowest two quiz scores will be dropped. Since the lowest two quiz scores will be dropped, no makeups will be given on quizzes.

2. Midterms: There will be three midterms, 60 minutes in length, tentatively scheduled for: 1/30, 3/20, 4/17. Since this is a three-hour class meeting once a week, it is important to note that on the night a midterm is given, new course material will be covered during the rest of the class session.

3. The Final Examination is comprehensive and is scheduled for Wednesday, May 8th, 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
